Oophorectomy
Oophorectomy (Ooph = ovaries, ectomy = remove) is an operation where theovary is removed. This is performed when there is a cyst which is suspicuosand may be cancer. Bilateral oophorectomy is performed as part of ahysterectomy when a woman has either ovarian or endometrial (womb) cancer. It may also be performed via a laparoscopy in women with a family history ofovarian cancer or women thought to be at increased risk of ovarian cancer.Sometimes bilateral oophorectomy is the last option for the management ofsevere endometriosis.
