Surgery - designer vaginas
This catchy title usually relates to surgery that repairs the perineum (the entrance to the vagina). The perineum, vulva (groin area) or labia (lips) (see anatomy) can cause embarrassment if it appears unusual or if sexual intercourse is painful or simply not pleasurable. Sometimes this is because of the way the area appears e.g. large or floppy labia, but more commonly it is because of the damage caused during childbirth. The majority of these complaints can be dealt with by relatively simple day case surgery, so called designer vagina surgery. More extensive problems with the pelvic floor may require major surgery, e.g. vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair (see below) or bladder neck repair for urinary incontinence.
